Tips to formulate your requests to Admin Companion
  • Be aware, that Admin Companion has a huge general knowledge as learned from the whole internet, but it doesn't know anything about your system, if it is not part of the recent dialogue. Therefore give it specific information about your setup, where needed.
  • Think of Admin Companion as a system administrator, which sits with you in front of the shell and does not know your system yet.
  • The command line is only suitable for shorter one or two sentence instructions. Bigger instructions should be done by invoking ai without parameters.
  • Be aware, that Admin Companion executes its commands in a subshell of yours. This means, it starts from the directory, where you are, but it doesn't have access to your environment variables.
  • Admin Companion can work better step by step. Results are then usually better than trying to directly jump from a problem to the final conclusion.
  • When you include any snippets (shell scripts or pasted texts) into your instruction, it is good to enclose them with ``` (yes, it is the backwards oriented one) in a separate line at the beginning and at the end. So Admin Companion can better identify the start and the end of your snippet.
  • Dare to request Admin Companion to go a different way, when the first answer does not fit yet. For example, when Admin Companion asks you to execute a task, you can also ask it to execute itself.
  • Always be polite. This leads to better results. :)

Why do I get a "Account limit reached in the Admin Companion log file?
The credits on your account are consumed. You can choose "Automatic Refill" on the "Account" page of the web console.
When you have consumed all your credits, this automatically refills the credits at your next usage of Admin Companion, by charging your payment method.
The refill amount is the same as your monthly fee. This re-charged amount will not expire at the end of the month, but will be available for usage until you cancel your subscription.

How can I save money by keeping conversation history short?

Admin Companion remembers your conversation history. This history is needed in every request for a choerent conversation. Therfore the number of tokens in your input increases with each request until an amount of around 8000 tokens (± 500 tokens).

When you have finalized one topic, you can clear the conversation history by calling ai -c, which deletes the conversation history and starts from scratch with only your input in the first request.

Does Admin Companion lose focus in long converstations?

Admin Companion remembers your conversation history up to a maximum number of tokens (one token is about 0.75 words). The maximum request token size defines the size of the conversation history Admin Companion can remember. The standard setting is 8000 tokens.

Due to that, an initial question can flow out of the conversation history and Admin Companion does not remember anymore the initial question.

There are two options to get around this:

  1. Increase the maximum number of request tokens
    • Set the max request token size permamently in the Admin Companion configuration file
To set a bigger max request token size, adapt the variable
      MAX_REQUEST_TOKENS
in the Admin Companion configuration file at /etc/admin-companion/admin-companion.cfg
    • Set the max request token size temporarily on the command line of Admin Companion with the -s parameter
Sample: ai -s 120000 Who are you?
This sets the maximum size of the history to 120'000 tokens for this one session. So the history can grow to that new size.
This longer conversation history will also be stored for the next invocation of the command.
So, if you execute the ai command next time also with the increased request token size, Admin Companion will remember the longer history.
But if you execute the ai command next time without the increased request token size, the history will be truncated before Admin Companion "thinks" about it.

  2. Set the topic
You can set a topic, which Admin Companion will remember forever, until you remove it again.
    • Set a topic
ai -t Let us analyze the database my_funny_database. Always execute mysql commands with a -p parameter, so I can give the password
This sets an overall topic for Admin Companion, which will be stored permanentely, even for future invocations of the ai command.
Admin Companion will show you the topic each time you invoke the ai command.
    • Remove a topic
      ai -r
This removes a topic, which previously was set with the -t parameter
